Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is an over-the-counter supplement frequently used to alleviate symptoms associated with joint inflammation, muscle pain, allergies or stomach upset. The safety and effectiveness of this natural supplement has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Patients should discuss the use and limited side effects of MSM with a doctor before beginning treatment.
Stomach Upset
The majority of patients who take MSM do not experience side effects. Patients who develop side effects most commonly experience stomach upset. These stomach upset symptoms, which can include nausea, constipation or diarrhea, occur most frequently in patients who use MSM for prolonged periods of time. Bowel movement changes may also be accompanied by sensations of bloating, cramping or discomfort within the abdomen. Patients who develop stomach upset symptoms can limit the severity of these side effects by eating a small snack or meal before taking a dose of MSM.
Fatigue or Insomnia
Use of MSM can cause sleep-related side effects in certain patients, according to Drugs.com, a peer-reviewed drug information resource for consumers. Affected patients can develop insomnia, a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep through the night. Patients who do not achieve restorative sleep during the night can experience increased fatigue during the day. As a result, patients taking MSM may be unable to concentrate or remain focused while at work or school.
Headache
While using MSM, patients can develop headache symptoms as a side effect of treatment. Painful headache symptoms can occur within any region of the head and may contribute to decreased alertness or concentration in affected patients. Use of an over-the-counter analgesic medication, such as acetaminophen, can help decrease headache symptoms in certain patients.
Allergic Reaction
Rarely, patients taking MSM for the first time can develop an allergic reaction to this supplement. Side effects of an allergic reaction can be life-threatening and include breathing difficulties, heart rate irregularities, dizziness, hives, headache or swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat. Patients who develop any of these side effects after taking a dose of MSM should seek emergency medical care immediately. Patients who are allergic to sulfur should not take MSM.
