Ginger root, which is the rhizome of the ginger plant, has a strong and spicy flavor and is used in a variety of recipes. According to the American Cancer Society, ginger can also be used to treat the symptoms of some health conditions. Consult a doctor before using ginger to treat any symptoms or illnesses.

Prevent Vomiting

Ginger is used as a home remedy to prevent nausea and vomiting in some individuals, including boat workers and pregnant women, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Peel a piece of ginger root using a vegetable peeler, then cut a few tiny slivers off of the root. Place the ginger between your cheek and gums, and slowly chew the corners of the ginger. Ginger has a strong taste, so do not bite down on the entire piece of ginger at once. Chew the ginger slowly to help reduce feelings of nausea and prevent the urge to vomit.

Reduce a Fever

Sipping a homemade ginger ale mixture may help reduce a fever, says Kathi Keville, author of "Herbs for Health and Healing." Pour three cups of water, one tsp. of fresh ginger sliced very thinly, and one tsp. red raspberry leaves into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer the mixture for five minutes. Allow the mixture to cool, then add one cup of carbonated water and a slice of lemon. Sip the mixture to reduce a fever.

Grate Into Salad Dressing

Fresh ginger root is used in a variety of cooking recipes, including some salad dressings. To make your own ginger salad dressing, add fresh grated ginger to store-bought salad dressing, or to a small amount of balsamic vinaigrette and olive oil mixed together. Ginger has a fibrous consistency, so use a very sharp zester or grater to turn a small piece of ginger into a pulp. Add the ginger to the salad dressing or oil and shake to combine. Pour over your favorite salad.
