A bone scan is a noninvasive test commonly given to evaluate a variety of bone-related problems, including osteoporosis, arthritis, bone pain and bone cancer. The test involves the injection of a radioactive tracer into the bloodstream that spreads through the body and accumulates in the bones, where it is detected by the scanner.

Step 1

Do not take any medications with bismuth, such as Pepto-Bismol, for four days before the scheduled scan.

Step 2

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up for the injection. Don't wear any jewelry.

Step 3

Take a list of medications you use and medical conditions you have in case a medical history is required before the scan.

Step 4

Follow any directions you're given regarding the two- to three-hour delay between the injection and the actual scan. This time period allows the radioactive tracer to be absorbed and distributed. You may be permitted to leave the center during this time.

Step 5

Drink extra water to flush out excess tracer and prevent it from accumulating in your bladder.

Step 6

Return to the center at the agreed-upon time for the actual scan, which will take about an hour.

Tips and Warnings

  • The amount of radioactivity you will be exposed to is roughly equivalent to what you would receive during a standard X-ray procedure. The small amount of residual radioactivity left by the tracer dissipates in two to three days.
  • This scan is not considered safe for pregnant women because the radioactive tracer might harm the fetus. Tell your doctor if you're pregnant. The scan may be given to women who are breastfeeding, but the radioactive tracer can pass into breast milk, so you may need to temporarily stop breastfeeding.

Things You'll Need

  • List of current medications
  • Brief medical history
