With all the new exercise DVDs and videos produced each year, it can be overwhelming to try to keep up with the latest releases. One way to measure the marketplace is by keeping track of Amazon's product sales rankings and their bestseller lists. As of May 2010, these were Amazon's top selling exercise DVDs.
P90X Extreme Home Fitness Workout Program by Tony Horton
At a list price of $150, this one's not for the faint of wallet, but then again, it's not just a single DVD. It includes 13 DVDs, a nutrition guide and an exercise planner. Personal trainer Tony Horton leads these workouts, and they're diverse. Each DVD focuses on a different muscle group or type of workout: yoga, Kenpo, stretching and cardio.
30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels
Jillian Michaels, one of the two trainers on the television show The Biggest Loser, dominates Amazon's bestseller list in this category. This DVD includes three levels, providing one workout for each level. Each workout is just under 30 minutes, and mixes cardio, strength training and abdominal training. Weight loss is the focus of this program.
Insanity: 60-Day Total Body Conditioning Program by Shaun T
This program includes 10 DVDs, a nutrition guide, a calendar and free online support tools. The workouts involve cardio and plyometric drills combined with training for strength, power, resistance and core. Trainer Shaun T leads these very intense workouts for people who want to be pushed to their limits. Each workout is between 20 and 80 minutes. The list price is $169.99.
Yoga Meltdown by Jillian Michaels
In this DVD, Michaels leads the viewer in "hard-core yoga power poses" meant to help them shed pounds quickly. There are two 30-minute workouts here: a level one and a level two. Both include a warm-up and cool-down period.
No More Trouble Zones by Jillian Michaels
This 2008 release concentrates on common "trouble zones" such as muffin tops, saddlebags, and jiggly arms. It's circuit training that involves upper and lower body exercise. It's a single 40-minute workout plus warm-up and cool-down time, and goes through seven separate segments according to muscle groups. The viewer should have three-to-five-pound weights to use with this program.
Banish Fat, Boost Metabolism by Jillian Michaels
This is a difficult 40-minute circuit workout that includes cardio, abdominal exercises, and strength training geared toward fat loss. It includes seven six-minute circuits with minimal breaks and doesn't require any weights or equipment.
Yoga for Beginners by Barbara Benagh
Yoga instructor and yoga studio owner Barbara Benagh teaches this introductory DVD that provides eight routines to help exercisers build strength, increase their flexibility and improve their health. Routines range from 10 to 60 minutes apiece. The DVD was filmed on a beach in Antigua to add to its tranquil feel.
