Acai berries are a popular "superfood" and are found in the form of juice and supplements at many health food stores. The berry, harvested from Central and South America, is full of antioxidants that help stop or slow the oxidation that causes damage to cells. There are many benefits of a diet high in acai berries or supplements, and research is being conducted to help clarify the debate.

Weight Loss

Weight loss is the No. 1 claim associated with the acai berry supplement, but research on the connection is limited. Acaiberry.org suggests that acai supplements contain natural ingredients that help increase energy by providing vitamins. A diet high in fruits and vegetables may also provide energy-facilitating vitamins, but some manufacturers claim their acai supplements have higher amounts of anthocyanins and antioxidants than fruit alone.

Heart Healthy Benefits

The Mayo Clinic states that acai berry supplements are a source of fiber, antioxidants, omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids. These ingredients can possibly support the claim that the supplements may lower cholesterol and decrease the risk of heart disease. High amounts of anthocyanins may also contribute to the heart-healthy benefits as discussed by Learninginfo.org.

Anti-aging Benefits

High levels of antioxidants in the diet can be associated with anti-aging effects, according to the Mayo Clinic. The antioxidants can help slow the cell damage caused by everyday living when the body comes into contact with the sun, certain foods or other oxidative agents. Levels of antioxidants are high in acai berries but may vary in supplements, depending on the manufacturer. Anti-aging claims are being researched for validity as many fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants.

Other Claims

Many manufacturers have other health claims associated with the acai berry supplement. Among these claims are improved digestion, better sleep quality, enhanced mental health, healthier skin, improved circulation and stronger immune system. Such claims are still being researched, and supplements may interact with medications so a discussion with a medical professional is warranted before beginning a regimen.
