The practice of aromatherapy involves using essential oils, naturally distilled from plants, to improve the health of the body, mind and spirit. Many holistic health practitioners agree that these essential oils provide a natural, healthy way to promote overall health and well-being. There are many essential oils believed to help treat many physical and emotional problems. These oils can be purchased online and at local specialty stores. Consult with a physician before ingesting any essential oil.

Lavender

Lavender essential oil is distilled from the flower of the lavender plant. According to "The Aromatherapy Bible" by Gill Farrer-Halls, lavender is one of the most popular, versatile and widely used essential oils. Lavender oil is believed to be very calming and soothing. Lavender oil can be rubbed into the skin to relax tight muscles and soothe muscle pain, or rubbed into the temples to ease headache pain. Placing 1 to 2 drops onto your pillow at night is also thought to help combat insomnia. Lavender oil is believed to ease the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome and depression and aid in balancing mood swings. It may be used as an insect repellent and can be rubbed onto the skin to ease discomfort from insect bites as well as minor cuts and burns. It is thought to be beneficial in treating cold and flu symptoms and warding off viruses.

Rosemary

Rosemary oil is most often steam distilled from the flowering top of the plant. According to "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils" by Julia Lawless, rosemary oil has been used for relieving muscle pain, easing digestive discomfort, removing fatty deposits from the liver and improving liver function, circulatory and respiratory disorders. Rosemary oil is used in cosmetics, soaps and household sprays. It is thought to be effective in repelling insects, treating lice and aiding with skin problems, such as eczema and acne.

Bergamot

Bergamot oil has a citrus scent and is extracted from the peel of the bergamot fruit just before it reaches full ripeness. According to "The Aromatherapy Bible," bergamot oil is one of the best essential oils for treating urinary-tract infections. Bergamot is also thought to uplift the spirits, alleviate depression and ease anxiety, sadness and grief. To ease a fever, add 2 to 3 drops of bergamot oil to a bath. Bergamot oil is also believed to have many skin benefits, such as the ability to balance oily skin and treat acne.
