A softball helmet is an important part of the uniform for any girl playing the game. The helmet, made of molded plastic and lined with foam, protects the player's head from an errant pitch. A softball helmet covers the sides, top and back of the head, as well as at least one ear. One-eared helmets cover the left ear for right-handed batters and the right ear for left-handed batters. This protects the ear facing the pitcher, while freeing up the other ear, making it easier for the batter to hear the umpire.

Step 1

Select the features that are important to you. Girls with long hair may prefer a helmet with a ponytail port, an opening in the back of the helmet to pull their ponytail through. Helmets with face guards provide extra protection for girls with dental work or glasses. They also add an extra layer of protection from a wild pitch and are designed to minimize problems with visibility, making them a good all-around choice. Some softball helmets come with detachable sweatbands, making them more comfortable to wear during long afternoons, and easy to clean between games.

Step 2

Try on a variety of helmets to find a comfortable fit. Some helmets are sized, while others are adjustable. Different brands of helmets that appear to be the same size can fit differently. The helmet should be loose enough to slide on and off easily, but snug enough so that it doesn't fall forward over the player's eyes.

Step 3

Check the helmet for certification. Once you have settled on a style and design, look for a sticker from the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment. The NOCSAE develops standards for protective gear used in sports, including softball helmets.

Tips and Warnings

  • When trying on a softball helmet, bend forward, move side to side and shake your head. The helmet should remain firmly in place. Many softball helmets have a chin strap, but this is for added security, it should not be necessary to keep the helmet on your head.
  • The batter, baserunners, catcher and any bat girls or boys on the field must wear a helmet for protection.
