A holistic approach to weight loss refers to actions or practices that involve your mind, body and spirit in making changes necessary to produce healthy weight loss results. Your holistic weight loss plan should be comprised of a spiritual and mental discipline, followed by herbal support and complemented by healthful, uplifting exercise.
Herbal Support
Natural herbs and foods that promote or support weight loss can be classified as stimulants, diuretics, cathartics and appetite suppressants. These exist in natural substances we commonly use.
Stimulants such as green tea are known to encourage the body to burn more calories by affecting the processes of thermogenesis. Diuretics such as dandelion and burdock are herbs that cause the body to excrete water through excess urine. Cathartic agents such as aloe vera and senna cause stimulation of the large intestine, which minutely reduces a person's overall calorie consumption by forcing food to be evacuated from the body prior to full digestion. Natural appetite suppressants such as cinnamon and chickweed decrease hunger symptoms by creating a feeling of fullness in the stomach, altering your mood, or providing a satisfying taste that makes further eating undesirable.
Yoga Mudras
The word mudra is a Sanskrit word which means seal. The yoga mudras are used to seal or affirm an idea or intention. These hand and finger positions are designed to allow a flow of the body's energy in specific patterns that support the meditation mantra. The mudras are a nonverbal mode of communication consisting of hand gestures and finger postures. In the practice of yoga, mudras invoke divine power in the mind. A mudra believed to specifically help with weight loss is called Surya Mudra. Many believe that it can help cure obesity. It is said to control hunger and temptation for food and change the metabolism so that it is easy to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight balance. Another mudra, Prithvi Mudra is said to reduce cholesterol in the body while helping to reduce weight.
Conscious Movement
Dance is an excellent weight loss activity. It fulfills the two most important criteria for sustainable natural weight loss--enjoyability and efficiency. Dance is, by nature, a cardiovascular activity, which means you will expend calories efficiently. It is also an enjoyable activity, which ensures you will do it consistently for longer periods. Edward R. Laskowski, M.D., of the Mayo Clinic, confirms that dance is a weight loss activity that burns calories at a rate comparable to walking, swimming and cycling.
You can also start using qigong exercises immediately for your own self-healing and weight loss purposes. Qi, or chi, is the Eastern concept of "life force" or "energy field." With practice, you can use your qi in a way that can produces warmth, coolness, tingling sensations or even shaking while you practice the exercises. Regular practice will reap the greatest body and energy balancing rewards.
