Positive thinking influences people physically and mentally. Chronic negative thinking is linked to the production of stress hormones that make people feel worse. While positive thinking does not generate positive hormones, it does curb the production of the more harmful ones. Positive thinking can also improve a person's attitude and boost their self-confidence.
Positive Thinking Advantages in Therapy and Recovery
Positive thinking improves mental and emotional health and contributes to the success of therapy and recovery. There are two methods for integrating positive thinking into therapy. Patients recovering from mental illness can be treated in part through cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, and acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT. ACT trains patients to interpret events in their best light instead of seeing them as personal affronts. The desired outcome of ACT is to prevent patients from being negative by helping them to perceive events differently and consider the potentially positive motivations behind others' actions.
CBT evaluates the ways in which people develop self-destructive thinking patterns based on misconceptions and untrue beliefs. In CBT, the goal is to direct the patients toward more modulated and realistic beliefs than the destructive beliefs from which they are suffering. Both of these forms of treatment have been shown to improve the outcome of therapy and treatment for mental illness.
Positive Visualization Benefits
Athletes may visualize themselves achieving a goal, while students may visualize academic success. This type of regular visualization can increase optimism and confidence while reducing stress and anxiety. An article on visualization for "P&G Everyday Solutions" notes that when the impact of these negative emotions is reduced or eliminated, people find that they are actually able to accomplish the tasks with more ease than before.
Optimism as a Life Strategy
Dr. Tamar Chansky outlines a series of positive habits and attitudes that help in the overall improvement of one's outlook, success and health. She recommends having positive and realistic goals, avoiding negative self-talk and clearly identifying which problems or negative situations can be controlled and which ones can not. Being aware of one's own strengths and weaknesses, having some flexibility in our definitions of success and acknowledging and learning from mistakes are also essential to this strategy, as are active and sincere displays of generosity and gratitude toward others.
Attitude is Contagious
Attitude is generally reciprocated. You tend to smile at someone who smiles at you or react unfavorably to someone frowning your way. Adopting, displaying and sharing positive thoughts encourage others to do the same, which improves the social environments within families, workplaces and other social groups.
