Smart Shopping for an Elder's Phone

Elderly folks like to talk too! However, phones seem to be getting smaller and the feature set continues to grow. All my mother needs is a few buttons and a picture of who she is calling, or who is calling her, a green button to dial or answer, and a red button to hang up. Who knew? No such animal exists- but things are getting better.

What to Look for

Here are the most common features that elders need and that you should shop for:

-Adjustable and amplified incoming sound
-Includes programmable photo memory buttons
-Has adjustable incoming volume control
-Includes bright visual ring indicator
-Includes an extra loud ringer
-Has an extra large, easy-to-use dial pad
-Has a high contrast color display that accommodates photo identification of the caller
-Can vibrate as well as ring
-Has a hearing aid adapter

Common Pitfalls

Watch out that the phone you purchase has the following:

A long battery life
An easy to connect battery charger
A phone plan that minimizes minutes if the phone will be used only for emergencies.
