I Can't Twist Like A Pretzel: Demystifying Yoga

I Can't Twist Like A Pretzel: Demystifying Yoga

I hear them all the time -- excuses why people think they can't do yoga. I chalk it up to human nature. We tend to limit ourselves from doing things we perceive as "different" partially because we simply don't know enough about them. We've all done it.

Here are a few things you should know about Yoga:

1. You do not have to be FLEXIBLE to do yoga. I blame it on all those pictures of yogis twisted up like pretzels! This is probably the number one myth about yoga. Yoga probably will help you increase your flexibility. But thanks to yoga props like yoga blocks, straps, blankets and other fun little toys -- you can modify ANY yoga pose and achieve tremendous benefit. A good teacher will make sure you have chosen an appropriate and safe modification. I have seen people with very limited flexibility and mobility really learn to love their yoga practice.

2. Yoga does not HAVE to be a spiritual experience. It's not a religion. You do not have to wear patchouli oil or chant. You don't have to understand sanskrit. It CAN be some of those things if that's what you're looking for. But there are many yoga teachers who have studied many different yoga styles. Many wonderful teachers keep it real simple and choose not to imbue their class with that stuff. Finding the right teacher and style is key!

3. Yoga can be both EASY or HARD. Many times people will try one yoga class and think that all yoga looks like that. See #2! The many different styles of yoga range from very restorative and peaceful classes to dynamic flowing sweaty classes that will feel like a workout. Whatever you want or need, there is likely a great yoga choice for you. I'd bet on it. I love to refer people to various practices of yoga based upon what they may be looking for... there is so much to choose from!

4. You don't have to go to classes to do Yoga. While nothing beats the individual attention of a good teacher, you can learn about yoga poses from books, magazines and DVDs. Then you can practice your favorite poses on your own in almost any space. You can devote 15 minutes to a series of poses or repeat various series for as long as you like. When traveling you can practice yoga everywhere from your hotel room to the beach. It's not mandatory that you have any equipment or a particular kind of outfit. You don't even need shoes!

What are you waiting for? Give it a try. Namaste. (Ask your yoga teacher!)
