Traditional Chinese medicines and herbal remedies have been and are still used not only in China but countries around the world to treat a variety of medical conditions and symptoms, including joint and muscle pain. Pain caused by injury, arthritis or osteoporosis and other medical conditions may be effectively treated with a variety of basic Chinese herbs and remedies.
Ma Huang
Ma huang, more commonly known in Western countries as ephedra, is used in traditional Chinese medicine to relieve pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Ephedra is used to help restore joint motion and mobility and relieve pain and soreness. Ma huang is best used for those exposed to windy weather patterns that initiate painful inflammation of the joints.
Wu Tou
Known as aconite in the Western world, Wu Tou is commonly prescribed by traditional Chinese medical practitioners for individuals suffering from joint or muscle pain caused by cold weather conditions. For such individuals, pain is often focused on a specific joint or muscle. Pain relief through a combination of herbs and warmth such as a hot water bottle may provide relief. Wu tou is a root of the aconite, also known as Zhi Chuan Wu in Chinese.
Yi Yi Ren
If you're experiencing aching, stiff joints caused by cold, damp weather, trying Yi Yi Ren, known in English as coix or a Coicis decoction, may provide relief, states the TCM Assistant. The herbal remedy contains various components, including but not limited to ephedra, cinnamon, white peony root and licorice root, according to Eagle Herbs.
Wangbi Chongii
A widely used and popular arthritis formula since the 1940s, Wangbi chongii is comprised of a number of ingredients that help relieve pain, reduce swelling and inflammation and restore range of motion and mobility in arthritic joints. While the actual formula is a secret, it is known, according to Dr. Subhuti Dharmananda of the Institute for Traditional Medicine, that the mixture contains warming herbs such as aconite, rehmannia and dipsacus, as well as wind-damp reducing herbs like ma huang, cinnamon twigs and clematis, among others.
Shuguan Wenjing Chongii
Treating individuals with moderate to severe arthritis may be treated with a formula called Shunguan wenjing chongii, which contains amounts of epimedium, aconite, clematis, and other ingredients for those determined to have a deficiency in their yang balance. Those with a ying imbalance are often offered a concoction of wasp nest, earthworm, rehmannia and photinia, among other ingredients, for relief of pain and inflammation. according to Dr. Dharmananda.
