Apple cider vinegar has quite a few properties that can be useful in home remedies. According to the book "1,801 Home Remedies," the vinegar's acidic nature kills bacteria that can cause infections, dandruff and other skin issues. It can also reduce soreness and inflammation. Apple cider vinegar is mild enough to apply to even the most sensitive skin, a fact that gives it an added benefit over conventional over-the-counter treatments.
Sore Muscles
Apple cider vinegar is an ingredient in several different treatments for sore aching muscles. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Household Solutions" says that the acid cools and relaxes the skin and muscles. It's particularly good for strained muscles, menstrual cramps and tired feet and legs.
To make a soak for cramps and overexerted muscles, add two cups of apple cider vinegar to a warm bath and soak for as long as you'd like. If your pain is more localized, an apple cider vinegar liniment can be helpful. Beat one egg white with two tbsp. of apple cider vinegar until thoroughly mixed. Rub the liniment into your skin twice daily.
Dandruff
The antibacterial properties of apple cider vinegar are particularly effective in stopping chronic dandruff issues. Though dandruff is sometimes caused by dry scalp, if it is an ongoing issue, it is more likely to be a bacterial infection. Mix one cup of water with one cup of apple cider vinegar. After shampooing your hair, pour the vinegar mixture over your head as a rinse.
Acne
Apple cider vinegar can soothe sore patches of acne, as well as gently eliminate the bacteria that can further irritate the blemishes. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Household Remedies" recommends mixing two tsp. of apple cider vinegar with eight oz. of water. Use a cotton swab to apply the mixture to your acne several times a day after washing your face.
Ear Infections
If you're prone to swimmer's ear and other infections, apple cider vinegar can work as a preventative agent. After swimming, gently dry the outside of your ear with a soft towel. Mix one tsp. of apple cider vinegar and one tsp. of rubbing alcohol together in a small jar and use a dropper to put one to two drops of the solution in each ear. The mixture dries out the ear canal and kills bacteria that can cause issues.
