One of the traits shared by successful people is that they are positive thinkers. According to the Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, also known as REBT, created by Albert Ellis, PhD, the perception of events has more effect on the people than the actual event itself. Dr. Ellis claims that negative emotions prevent people from being as productive as they could be. Learning to think positively requires discipline, according to the Leadership and Motivation Training website, but it's worth it to overcome negative thoughts that prevent success.

Reality

Know the reality of the situation. Study the facts but avoid turning them into something worse than they are. Learn the causes of the reality and concentrate on what is temporary and can be changed. Find a more positive angle to evaluate the situation as it is and find ways to change your viewpoint in the future. Realize that there are some things you can't change, then find a way to change what you can.

Personal

Understand yourself and appreciate what you have. When you see your reflection in the mirror, look at yourself in whole, and avoid nitpicking small, individual flaws. Surround yourself with positive people and stay away from anyone who drags you down.
ThePulse.org recommends making a list of 10 things you like about yourself and reading it daily. Continue adding to your list as you think of more things.

Confidence

Carry yourself with confidence and openness. Avoid negative media that tries to make people into some unattainable creation that will only frustrate you. Instead of worrying about your appearance or what you wish you had, think about how you can help others in less fortunate circumstances. Take some time to relax and rejuvenate.

Commitment to Goals

Commit yourself to your passions and act on them. Making a commitment to people you care about and getting their support can help take you closer to your goals and dreams, states Jeff Cohen in "Positive Thinking in Just 7 Steps," an article on solveyourproblem.com. Once you start acting on your passions in a positive way, you'll find that many things you want are within reach.

Attitude

Be enthusiastic about all your endeavors, and avoid wallowing in negativity. Rather than becoming worked up in a negative way, find humor in situations, no matter how difficult they may be. Aspire for lofty goals and enjoy each step that takes you there. When negative thoughts enter your mind, find a way to turn them positive, advises Christina Diaz on the Benefits of Positive Thinking website. This takes practice, but over time, you will automatically think positive thoughts without having to work so hard at them.
