Essential oils are extracted from various types of plants, including shrubs, trees, flowers and herbs. Many holistic and natural health practitioners believe that these essential oils have a variety of healing and medicinal properties. Many of these oils also are used in skin care, with some being safe and mild enough to be used on sensitive skin. Signs that you have sensitive skin include easy reddening, itching, irritation or frequent allergic reactions to cosmetics and skin-care products.

Roman Chamomile

Roman chamomile essential oil comes from the flower of the Roman chamomile herb. According to "A Complete Guide To Understanding and Using Aromatherapy For Vibrant Health and Beauty," by Roberta Wilson, Roman chamomile is an excellent option for treating dry and sensitive skin. Roman chamomile oil, when used on a regular, daily basis reduces the itchiness, irritation, inflammation, redness and dryness that often accompanies sensitive skin. Roman chamomile oil can also be used on the scalp and to condition hair.

Rose Oil

Rose essential oil is also an option for treating sensitive skin. Rose oil is most commonly distilled from the damask rose (Rosa damascene) and the cabbage rose (Rosa centifolia). According to "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils," by Julia Lawless, rose oil is especially effective at treating sensitive and mature skin. Rose essential oil is thought to diminish the appearance of redness and wrinkles. It also is used to moisturize dry and sensitive skin and to treat skin diseases.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is taken from the flower of the lavender plant and is a versatile, multi-purpose oil that can be used to treat an array of skin problems. According to "A Complete Guide To Understanding and Using Aromatherapy For Vibrant Health and Beauty," lavender oil has soothing and balancing effect on the skin. Lavender oil is thought to have a cooling and soothing effect on sunburns. It is also believed to regulate oil and reduce the appearance of acne. Lavender oil is sometimes used to clear up sensitive skin irritations that result from allergies. It is believed to be safe for individuals with sensitive skin, and can be used on wounds, insect bites, bruises, psoriasis, scabies and ringworm.
