Celestone, the brand name for the drug betamethasone, is a prescription medication used to treat symptoms associated with allergic reactions, inflammatory skin diseases and endocrine disorders. This medication can be administered as an oral syrup or as an injection. Celestone is a corticosteroid that helps control the inflammatory response of the body. Patients who take Celestone orally should discuss the side effects of this medication with a doctor prior to treatment initiation.

Indigestion or Increased Appetite

Oral treatment with Celestone can cause stomach indigestion in certain patients. Abdominal bloating, heartburn or stomach pain can occur as side effects of treatment, explains Daily Med, a drug information website supported by the National Institutes of Health. Despite these side effects, patients can develop an increase in appetite while using this medication. As a result, certain patients may experience unintended weight gain during treatment. Patients who experience severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or stomach pain while taking orally-administered Celestone should contact a doctor immediately.

Dizziness

Patients taking Celestone orally can experience dizziness as a side effect of treatment, explains Kaiser Permanente, a leading U.S. health care provider. Sensations of dizziness can cause affected patients to appear unstable while standing or walking. Patients who experience episodes of dizziness during Celestone treatment should take care to remain seated until this sensation passes in order to prevent injury from falling or tripping. Blurred vision, fainting or persistent dizziness should be discussed with a physician as soon as possible.

Headache

After taking a dose of Celestone, patients can experience headache side effects. Painful headache symptoms can occur within any region of the head and are typically mild to moderate in severity. Patients who develop headache side effects during treatment with Celestone may have difficulty concentrating at work or school. Using an over-the-counter pain reliever such as acetaminophen can help control headache side effects in certain patients.

Difficulty Sleeping

Patients treated with orally-administered Celestone can develop sleeping difficulties during treatment. Affected patients may be unable to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night. If this occurs, patients can experience increased daytime fatigue, which may affect their ability to remain productive during the day.

Excessive Sweating

When taken orally, Celestone can cause excessive sweating in certain patients, explains Drugs.com. This side effect can cause affected patients to wake frequently throughout the night drenched in sweat, which may exacerbate sleep-related side effects.

Nervousness

Unusual sensations of nervousness or anxiety can arise in certain patients treated with Celestone. Significant mood or mental changes such as depression or memory loss that occur while taking Celestone should be reported to a doctor immediately.
