When riding a mountain bike at night, safety is a concern because you might not be able to see where you are going. It also could be unsafe if animals or other riders cannot see you. Knowing how to build a mountain bike light to place on the front of your bike can keep you safe and make riding much more enjoyable. All you need is a flashlight, pliers and wire.

Step 1

Place the flashlight on the stem of your bike with the light pointed forward. The stem is the part of the bike that connects the handlebars to the steering tube. Using a standard flashlight, not an LED light, is the best way to create the mountain bike light. Ensure that it is sitting against your handle bar. You will then be able to see in front of you, regardless of the position of your front wheel.

Step 2

Tie a wire around the back portion of the flashlight and the handlebar. The wire should loop around the handlebars at least twice to help hold the flashlight in place.

Step 3

Twist the end of the wire to ensure that it is as tight as possible. Use the pliers to clip any excess wire off the end. After clipping the wires, place a wire cap on top of the wires to prevent being cut by sharp ends.

Step 4

Turn on the flashlight, and position the front of the light in the direction you want it to shine. It is best to place it straight ahead, since you will be pointing your bike in that direction most of the time.
