Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that comes from uranium found in the ground and water supply. Outdoors, it dissipates into the air and is considered harmless. Indoors, however, it can build up and become toxic. Alpha particles from the gas are highly damaging to lung cells, and can cause lung cancer and a variety of other diseases in the human body.

There are no obvious warning signs of radon contamination in the home, which is why it is important to have your home tested. This can be done professionally, or you can purchase a radon monitor for your home at most hardware stores. These monitors are easy to install, and may warn you of a build-up of radon in your home.

Lung Cancer

Radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer, according to the University of Minnesota. Increased levels of radon in the home heighten the risk of developing lung cancer. Smoking combined with radon exposure increases the risk even further. Radon has no acute effects, meaning there are no obvious symptoms of exposure before cancer develops. For this reason, it is especially important to monitor your home's radon levels.

Other Respiratory Diseases

Radon can also contribute to other respiratory conditions, such as emphysema, bronchitis and pneumonia. The damage is primarily done when radon is inhaled; topical exposure or consumption cause no ill effects. However, continued exposure to radon can have severe effects on the respiratory system over time.

Chromosomal Abnormalities

Radon has a teratogenic effect on a fetus, as well, and can cause the development of chromosomal abnormalities. If you are pregnant or may become pregnant, test your home for radon. This is especially important if you live in an area with a high concentration of uranium, or if you are frequently in the basement or ground level of your home, where radon tends to build up.
