Occupational Asthma Symptoms

Occupational asthma defines asthma that results because of exposure to irritants or allergens while at work. This condition can occur in those who handle animals, farm, work in manufacturing or become exposed to grain, dye, dust, rubber or strong chemicals while on the job. If the symptoms of occupational asthma occur, talk with a physician who can recommend medications and other techniques to help manage this disease.

Wheezing and Shortness of Breath

Individuals who are otherwise healthy and have never had asthma can develop occupational asthma states the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. If this is the case, the symptoms will occur only while at work and then subside when outside of the work environment. Shortly after exposure to a trigger sufferers may experience shortness of breath, trouble taking a deep breath and wheezing. It proves important to seek treatment right away as this condition can become chronic.

Cough and Cold Like Symptoms

According to the Merck website most cases of occupational asthma occur after months or years of exposure. Occupational asthma can also cause a worsening of symptoms in those who already have asthma. Common symptoms include coughing which may or may not be accompanied by sneezing, a runny nose, nasal congestion and watery or itchy eyes.

Chest Tightness

The narrowing of airway space and respiratory muscle spams that can occur with asthma can cause chest tightness, discomfort or pain. The Mayo Clinic website, MayoClinic.com states that any signs suggestive of asthma should prompt sufferers consult a doctor, because in severe cases asthma can become life threatening. In contrast occupational asthma that is diagnosed and treated in the early stages may be reversible. Look for symptoms that occur only when around certain triggers or that get continually worse as the week progresses but then subside over the weekends or holidays.
