Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue and multiple tender points on the body. There is no cure for fibromyalgia, but it is not fatal.

Scope

Fibromyalgia affects approximately 10 million people in the United States, according to the National Fibromyalgia Association. Men and women of all ages get fibromyalgia, but it is most common among middle-aged women.

Cause

The cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. It may be linked to abnormal levels of brain chemicals or to hormone imbalances, injury, infection, sleep disorders or genetics.

Symptoms

Patients typically complain of muscle pain, headaches, fatigue, sleep disorders, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. Symptoms are sometimes mild but can be debilitating.

Diagnosis

There is no laboratory test or scan for fibromyalgia. A patient who has suffered widespread pain for at least three months, as well as pain at 11 or more of 18 tender points on the body, may meet the criteria for diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and improving general health. Medications, physical therapy, massage, counseling, acupuncture and chiropractic treatment can be therapeutic.

Self-Care

Self-care measures---regular exercise, stress management, getting enough sleep, eating well and avoiding overexertion---are important components of the treatment regimen.
