A number of different factors affect self-confidence. Whether you don't like how you look, how you feel or what kind of person you are, most people struggle with self-confidence at some point in their lives. The good news is that you are in charge of who you are, and there are always things you can do to make positive changes in your life.

Get a Makeover

If you're not happy with the way you look, save up your money, and spend a day pampering yourself by getting a makeover with new clothes, new hair, and a completely new look. Changing the way you look can do wonders for your self-confidence and help you feel like a new person. Take a trusted friend along to help you pick out clothes and advise you on your new look.

Set a Goal

Whether it's running a marathon, losing weight or saving up for your favorite car, setting and achieving goals can help build confidence. Make sure it's an achievable goal, however, as setting unrealistic goals can set you up for failure, which can damage your self-confidence. Write down all the steps you will need to take in order to achieve your goal, and even set smaller milestones along the way to help you track your progress. For example, if your goal is to run a marathon, list the things you will need, such as running shoes, clothes and somewhere to run, and write down a training schedule. Once you reach your goal, enjoy your achievement, then go out and set another one. Reaching for your dreams and accomplishing them will help you feel better about yourself overall.

Develop a Talent

If there's a skill or talent you've always wanted to master, such as playing the guitar, learning how to speak another language or taking up golf, set your mind to it, and don't quit. Like goal-setting, developing talents can help unlock a new part of yourself you never knew existed and help boost your self-confidence. Find someone to be your mentor, and get tips and advice from them, or even ask them to help teach you your desired talent. Set up a practice schedule and take time everyday to develop your talent. Once you feel comfortable with it, demonstrate your talent to friends or family members who will appreciate your hard work and new skill.

Write Down Positive Thoughts

Many people who lack self-confidence dwell on negative thoughts, experiences and feelings. In order to focus on the positive in your life, make a list of all the positive things about it, such as your family, friends, your job, kids, significant accomplishments and awards. When you feel down or discouraged, instead of dwelling on negative thoughts, pull out your list and reflect on what you've done and the people who care about you. Any time you're feeling good about life, add whatever is making you feel good to the list.
