Assisted living facilities provide a housing option for senior citizens in transition. Although a resident's diminished physical capacity may mean he needs assistance with daily activities, he may still be capable of living independently. Assisted living communities provide the physical surroundings and social networks to enhance his quality of life.

Accommodations and Meals

At an assisted living facility, apartments are designed for independent living and may feature a living/dining area and a separate bedroom. Residents are provided with immediate staff access through "emergency call" buttons.
Meals are generally provided in a nicely-furnished community dining room. In addition to well-rounded menus, residents may enjoy special treats such as ice cream socials or theme dinners.

Activities and Amenities

Residents generally have several on-site activities from which to choose. During any given week, you may find a book discussion group, exercise classes or a social in the community garden. Libraries, beauty salons and chapels may also be located on site. For those who want to venture out, the facility often will have vans to take residents on shopping or other trips. Transportation to medical appointments can also be arranged.

Staff Support

Although a resident may need help with bathing, dressing and other personal care, she may be able to live fairly independently with regular assistance. Staff will be available to help her navigate the complex and provide assistance with activities. Facility staff also provide cleaning and laundry services, as well as assistance with other needs.

Medical Care

Assisted living residents generally don't require the intensive medical care such as that of a nursing home. Assisted living facilities may maintain on-call physician services and may also have registered nurses on the premises. Regular medical care usually is limited to medication assistance, which can be performed by medication aides.

Facility Affiliations

You may find an assisted living facility located adjacent to a retirement community. Both facilities may be operated under central management, and a retirement community resident may receive expedited admission to the neighboring facility.
You may also see an assisted living complex next to a nursing home. As an assisted living resident experiences a decline in his health or ability to live by himself, he may need to transition to an environment with more care.
