Common Side Effects of Moxifloxacin

Physicians may prescribe the generic drug moxifloxacin, an antibiotic, for a wide variety of bacterial infections, the Mayo Clinic reports. This fluoroquinolone-type antibiotic functions to kill bacteria that cause infection. It also may inhibit bacterial growth. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that moxifloxacin may find use against abdominal bacterial infections, skin or sinus infections, bronchitis and pneumonia, among others. Antibiotics do not kill viruses, such as those that cause the flu or colds.

Nausea and Vomiting

Antibiotics such as moxifloxacin may produce disruptions in the digestive system, which classify as common, non-serious and temporary side effects, the National Institutes of Health notes. Such problems as an upset stomach, nausea and vomiting may occur with the use of the drug, but symptoms tend to be mild and generally end on their own without medical help. The NIH recommends consulting a physician if stomach upset becomes severe, or if it continues for more than a few days.

Constipation and Diarrhea

Disruption of the digestive system may also cause constipation or diarrhea. Either of these intestinal difficulties can cause discomfort, but both should occur as mild problems, accompanied by mild cramps with moxifloxacin use. Drugs.com reports that these non-serious common side effects only require medical help if they occur for more than a few days, or if they manifest as severe side effects.

Pain and Weakness

Moxifloxacin may cause temporary mild pain at the onset of treatment. Pain may occur as headaches, or it may present in the stomach. Antibiotics such as moxifloxacin also may cause pain indirectly by inducing the appearance of mouth and tongue sores. The introduction of moxifloxacin into the body may also produce an overall feeling of weakness or fatigue. The weakness or fatigue should occur as a mild side effect as well, and generally pass in a few days.

Sweating and Itching

As moxifloxacin works in the body, it may create chemical circumstances that cause more-than-usual sweating to occur. For women, moxifloxacin may cause a burning sensation or itching in the vagina. All of these side effects classify as temporary, non-serious and common problems, the National Institutes of Health reports.
