Just like there are many different pine tree species, there are a variety of essential pine tree oils. Aromatherapist Patricia Davis explains in her book, "Aromatherapy: An A-Z," that essential pine oil's properties vary slightly depending on the specific species. The best pine oil comes from the Scotch or Maritime species. Davis also cautions to avoid oil from the Dwarf pine, as it is classified as a hazardous oil. Prior to utilizing pine or any essential oil for medicinal purposes, you should consult your doctor or a certified aromatherapist.

Bronchial Infections

Pine oil's properties include working as both an antibacterial agent and antiseptic. Because of these infection-fighting abilities, aromatherapists frequently employ essential pine oil to help fight off lower respiratory infections such as bronchitis. The University of Maryland Medical Center reviewed research on pine oil's effects on bronchitis and concluded that some scientific studies support essential pine oil's use in fighting off bronchial infections. Patricia Davis notes that in addition to the infection-fighting benefits, pine oil also works as an expectorant, so it helps break up mucus and clear it out of your lungs. Steam inhalations provide the best treatment method for this illness. Add a few drops pine essential oil to two cups steaming water and inhale the vapors. Just be sure to close your eyes so you don't burn them.

Sinus Infections and Colds

Essential pine oil can also help with other infections and illnesses. Davis recommends using pine oil for both sinus infections and to help with a cold. The University of Maryland Medical Center also notes that a research study found people with sinusitis improved their condition after receiving treatment with essential oils, including pine oil. You can use pine oil by itself or in conjunction with other infection-fighting oils such as eucalyptus or tea tree. For both sinus issues and colds, Davis suggests primarily using steam inhalations.

Muscular Pain

While pine frequently gets used to help fight off an infection, it can help you in other areas too. It also helps to relieve muscular aches and pains, according to Jeanne Rose's book "375 Essential Oils and Hydrosols." You can use pine oil in either a massage oil blend or add a few drops to a bath. Because pine oil can irritate your skin, in either of these applications you need to first dilute it with another carrier oil.
