On average, a person sleeps about one-third of his life. With so much time spent in bed, a healthy mattress makes a sound investment. Many household items including standard mattresses are full of chemicals and toxins that pollute the air indoors. Reducing the amount of toxins and chemicals in the home creates a healthier environment.

No Chemicals

The average mattress contains a number of man-made chemicals that you're exposed to every night. Polyester, nylon and polyurethane are common materials made from petroleum that are used in mattresses. According to the Organic Consumers Association, petroleum exposure might weaken the immune system and cause problems with the nervous system. Cotton used in regular mattresses gets treated with pesticides and chemicals to make them flame-retardant. Organic mattresses should be free of chemicals. The Organic Consumers Association states that there is no current regulation on labeling, which means some mattresses labeled "organic" or "natural" may still have some chemicals or pesticides.

Material Selection

Organic mattresses come in different types of materials giving you some choice in what you sleep on. Wool, organic cotton, natural rubber and foam are the most common options. Each type of material offers different benefits. Wool is a naturally flame-resistant material because of a high moisture content and keratin. Organic cotton offers a soft feeling to the touch. Natural rubber is a biodegradable material made with minimal processing from rubber-tree farm harvests. A rubber and foam mattress provides a lot of support for the spine.

Reduced Allergens

Most organic mattresses offer hypoallergenic qualities, which proves beneficial for those who experience allergies. Wool is resistant to dust mites, a common allergen. Organic cotton and rubber mattresses naturally offer hypoallergenic qualities. Because you spend so much time on top of a mattress, the hypoallergenic benefit helps you sleep easier with less irritation.

Moisture Absorption

Natural mattresses offer an additional benefit that can result in a more comfortable sleeping environment. Wool in particular absorbs moisture, which helps disperse your body heat as you sleep. This helps prevent waking up sweaty and hot in the middle of the night. Organic cotton also absorbs some moisture to keep you cooler and drier as you sleep. Keep these options in mind if you often find yourself waking up feeling hot.
