Hearing loss is a challenge that many people face as they age, and the seemingly easy remedy of purchasing a hearing aid isn't always so simple. When choosing which brand and model to purchase, you must sort through various features, styles and costs. Learning how to compare hearing aids can help you save money and choose the model that's right for you.

Step 1

Determine whether you want a digital or an analog hearing aid. Digital hearing aids cost more but have higher sound quality.

Step 2

Obtain the specifications of each hearing aid model. Your doctor or the manufacturer should be able to provide this information, which explains the features of the hearing aid. Features include volume control, noise reduction, speech enhancement, remote control capabilities and various channels. Hearing aids often have several channels, with each channel handling a different set of frequencies.

Step 3

Try on the hearing aid and determine how well it fits. Some hearing aids are worn behind the ear, while others are worn in the ear or in the ear canal. Children rarely wear in-ear hearing aids, because their ears are still growing. People of all ages and various degrees of hearing loss wear behind-the-ear hearing aids.

Step 4

Research consumer reviews. Read online reviews of various hearing aid models and ask friends and family members who have hearing aids.

Step 5

Compare prices. Analog hearing aids can be as low as a couple of hundred dollars, while digital hearing aids often cost over $1,000.

Step 6

Get warranty information. A good repair or replacement warranty can protect you if the hearing aid malfunctions.
