It is important for pregnant women to get a significant amount of vitamins and minerals for themselves and their unborn babies during pregnancy. Prenatal vitamins are a commonly recommended method for ensuring that women get the essential vitamins they need. Prenatal vitamins are composed of varying dosages of necessary vitamins, some of which are considered essential for a healthy pregnancy.

Folic Acid

Most prenatal vitamins contain folic acid, which helps prevent defects in the neural tubes. Common neural tube defects involve abnormalities of the brain or spinal cord, which can develop very early in the pregnancy, states the American Pregnancy Association. It is recommended that women take 400mcg of folic acid per day, especially during the first three months of pregnancy.

Calcium

Calcium is another vitamin that supports a healthy pregnancy by ensuring that the circulatory, muscular and nervous systems function properly. Calcium contributes to the development of healthy bones and teeth for mother and child. Calcium also helps to prevent blood clots. The recommended daily allowance is 1,000mg per day.

Iron

Iron deficiency is one of the most common concerns in pregnant women. Iron supports the healthy development of blood and muscle cells for mother and child. Getting adequate iron helps to prevent anemia. Pregnant women should aim to consume 27 to 30mg of iron per day, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

Availability

There are a number of brands of prenatal vitamins available. Some are available over-the-counter while some require a prescription. They may vary in terms of their ingredients, price range and effectiveness. It is best for a woman to follow the recommendations of her physician regarding which vitamins to take. This ensures that any deficiencies she may be experiencing during pregnancy are replenished adequately and with the correct dosage.
