Vacations offer a relaxing break from the monotony of everyday life. The break also tempts vacationers to indulge in foods that wouldn't normally fit into a weight loss program. Unhealthy foods, combined with a break in a regular exercise routine, lead to the possibility of a weight gain. A break in your weight loss program also makes you lose momentum making it difficult to get back in the routine when you return home.

Challenges

Vacation gives many travelers an excuse to take a break in their weight loss plans. Losing weight takes work, and vacations are meant to leave work behind. The vacation mentality combined with potential temptations at the vacation destination make it difficult to stay on track with weight loss. Travelers often leave behind their exercise routines while away. Dining out at restaurants on vacation exposes you to many unhealthy food options. Acknowledging the challenges before you pack your bags makes it easier to handle them once you arrive at your destination.

Exercise

Maintaining your exercise routine on vacation keeps your weight loss momentum on track. Exercise provides energy that allows you to take in more activities while on vacation. Working in physical activity as part of the vacation makes it more enjoyable. Walk, rather than drive, to nearby attractions or book an outing that involves physical activity. A hotel offering an exercise room allows you to start each day with a regular workout. Planning the entire vacation around physical activity such as a hiking trip allows you to blend the fitness aspects with the getaway.

Food

Surrounding yourself with healthy food options helps with vacation weight loss. One tactic is to bring along some of your own healthy snacks. The snacks are convenient and reduce the temptation to grab a candy bar or bag of chips at a nearby convenience store. Breakfast foods are easy to carry along for a healthy meal option. Fresh fruit, cereal bars or instant oatmeal work well. Look for a healthy menu section when dining out on vacation. Splitting a meal or saving half of it for the next day is another way to save calories.

Splurges

Balancing healthy dining choices with occasional splurges keeps you satisfied without overloading on fat and calories. Following up a healthy dinner with a small dessert or splitting a favorite appetizer with your travel partner satisfies your cravings while adhering to an overall healthy vacation diet. An extra walk or workout after a particularly high calorie meal helps balance out the dietary splurge.

Handling Temptations

Temptations pop up in many places while on vacation. Keeping yourself busy helps avoid the temptations. Focus on finding enjoyment in the vacation itself rather than on the food you eat. Planning out your food strategy before heading to the restaurant helps you make healthier choices. For example, you might decide to order soup and salad for lunch so that you can enjoy a steak and baked potatoes for dinner. Schedule in exercise time each day before you leave on the trip. Packing your workout clothes in a prominent location in the luggage reminds you of the need to exercise.
