Lavender takes its name from the Latin word "lavare" meaning "to wash." It's no wonder that people have used this fragrant herb for centuries in bath products, perfumes, tussy mussies and as a health product. Lavender has many beneficial effects on the hair, not the least of which is the delightful and calming scent.
Head Lice
Add lavender oil to your arsenal against head lice. Lice hate the smell of lavender and a liberal massage with lavender oil will kill both the lice and nits. Massage lavender oil into the scalp for 20 minutes before shampooing as usual.
Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an auto-immune disease that causes the hair to fall out all over the body, often in patches. A study reported by the University of Maryland Medical Center found that people who rubbed lavender and other oils into their scalps had significant hair regrowth. One problem with the study, however, is that there was no way to tell which of several oils were effective.
Hair Growth
Lavender oil used with scalp massage is an effective way to nourish the hair. If your hair is also thinning, lavender helps stimulate growth and balance oil production. In addition, the massage improves circulation, an important factor in hair growth.
Lavender Hair Rinse
Simmer 1/4 cup of dried lavender in two cups of water. Add a few drops of lavender oil. Rinse your hair with it and leave on for 15 minutes. After rinsing it out, your hair will be shiny and fragrant. This is also an effective treatment for dandruff.
