3 Ways to Learn Reiki

1. Take a Class

Reiki is the art of energy healing, of learning to become sensitive enough to find energy blocks within oneself or a client, and then knowing how to disperse a blockage. One way to do so is to take a class. Check out massage schools in your area. If Reiki is not offered, ask the schools for referrals. Other resources may be local martial arts schools. Since Reiki is the art of moving energy, like many martial arts, quite a few dojo masters are also Reiki masters. Before a class, eat lightly. It is difficult to sense energy if all the body's faculties are working on digesting protein and grains. Fruit is the ideal food for energy sensing, followed by vegetables, brown rice and other whole, unrefined grains. Also, the deeper you can breathe, the better you will sense energy. If you typically experience shallow breathing, go for a run or do some aerobic exercise before your Reiki class.

2. Develop Your Intuition

Some people are natural Reiki practitioners. They know that energy only needs one thing: to be acknowledged. Like old, toxic emotions, once an energy blockage is acknowledged and held in compassionate awareness, the illness or block can heal itself. If you feel that you are naturally sensitive, honor your instincts. Sit quietly and scan your own body. In areas of tightness or constriction, breathe lightly into the area and feel it loosen. If it does not, create a dialogue with the blockage, such as asking, "What do you need?" Then, wait for the answer. The same approach can be taken with a client. As she lies on a massage table, face up, run your hands slowly through the air about two inches from the body. Feel for energy shifts. If you feel one, simply ask the client, "Do you have issues with this area?" If so, ask the client to breathe lightly into this area, and keep your hands above this area until you intuitively feel ready to move on.

3. Learn from a Book

If you do not feel that you are a natural energy intuitive but feel that you could develop the instinct, find a book at your library or bookstore and follow the exercises to increase awareness of energy. One such exercise, perhaps the most common, is to stand up straight, knees slightly bent, and rub your hands quickly against one another, imagining energy flowing into your hands from below your navel. When your hands become warm and energized, you can move them to a sore or neglected spot on your own or someone else's body--always with a strong intent to heal and to accept the spot as it is.
