Conserving water is an important way to contribute to the global effort to protect what natural resources remain on the planet. According to Earth911, the average American uses about 100 gallons of water per day as of 2010. Water is an essential resource that many take for granted because it is so easy to turn on the faucet and have clean water. However, Earth911 encourages all humans to consider their water needs and conserve as much as possible in order to protect this vital resource.

Conserving Water Indoors

Bathing and cleaning are two of the primary uses of water inside a home. Water Use it Wisely suggests that conserving water begins at the individual level and that there are many small ways people can save water that will add up to a big difference. For example, saving water when washing dishes is as easy as filling one sink with soapy water and one sink with rinse water so the faucet does not need to be running in order to rinse. Water Use it Wisely also encourages people to only run their washing machine or dishwasher when it is completely full. Another easy tip is to collect water used for washing fruits and vegetables to water house plants with. You can also install low-flow faucets and shower heads in bathrooms and to replace old toilets with more efficient models.

Conserving Water Outdoors

Keeping landscaping and outdoor areas neat and attractive often takes a great deal of water. Adjust sprinklers to conserve water when spraying your garden. Watering in the morning or evening is a more efficient use of water. When cleaning the driveway, Water Use it Wisely encourages the use of a broom rather than the hose. Collecting rain water is another way to conserve water because it can be used to water the garden. Water Use it Wisely also recommends washing the car on the lawn so the excess water hydrates the grass.

Drink Tap Water

According to Earth 911, Americans use approximately 1,500 water bottles per second. Drinking tap water can ultimately save water because it takes water to create the bottles that bottled water is sold in, says Earth 911. Buy a reusable water bottle to have constant access to clean water without wasting it.
