Elliptical: PaceMaster Vs. Life Fitness

The next time you're at the gym, try each type of elliptical trainer lined up in the cardio room. You'll find that sometimes the small details--such as adjustable stride length or an adjustable incline ramp--make the difference between a smooth, enjoyable workout or an uncomfortable jog on a machine that you'd never use again. Though the PaceMaster and Life Fitness elliptical trainers are quite similar at first glance, the fine details set them apart.

Considerations

PaceMaster offers only one type of elliptical trainer, the Silver XT. By comparison, Life Fitness offers five base units, most of which have two console options.

Cost

As of 2010, a new Life Fitness elliptical trainer typically cost between $2,000 and $4,500, depending on base unit and console chosen, not including shipping costs. The PaceMaster retailed at about the middle of this price range, at a $3,000 manufacturer suggested retail price--again, not including shipping.

Features

The PaceMaster Silver XT has a dedicated strides per minute monitor to help you pace yourself evenly throughout the workout, non-slip footpads, built-in trays and MP3 player retaining clip. The PaceMaster also features 12 built-in fitness programs plus both moving and stationary handlebars that let you choose whether to work your upper body along with your legs.
Though not all elliptical trainers in the Life Fitness brand offer the same features, some are fairly standard. Commonly available features include adjustable stride length, built-in contact heart rate sensors, built-in beverage and reading trays, wireless heart rate monitor compatibility, preprogrammed electronic workout programs plus both stationary and moving handlebars.
Neither the PaceMaster nor the Life Fitness ellipticals offer an adjustable incline.

Weight Limit

The PaceMaster elliptical trainer's maximum user weight is 350 lbs. The maximum user weight for Life Fitness elliptical trainers ranges between 350 lbs. and 400 lbs., depending on the model.

Warranty

PaceMaster and Life Fitness elliptical trainers come with a lifetime frame warranty. The PaceMaster includes a three-year warranty on parts plus a one-year warranty on labor for residential use. Life Fitness models start with the same three-year parts warranty and one-year labor warranty, but the X8 base unit comes with a seven-year parts warranty.
