The digestive system begins in the mouth and ends at the anus. In between these two points are a number of organs lined by smooth muscles that aid in the breakdown and movement of food. Healthy digestion is the first step to providing your body with the proper nutrients for energy and nourishment. Any time this process is disrupted, your body will not receive optimal nutrition from the food you ingest. Herbs can help to prevent digestive disorders, as well as aid in their correction.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is a great herb to use if you are trying to resolve a chronic digestive disorder and restore your health. The phytochemical content of this herb is very beneficial for indigestion, leaky gut syndrome and ulcerative colitis, according to Dr. Gary Null. Because of its anti-inflammatory property, aloe is also a very effective remedy for Crohn's disease. It is also a safer alternative than cascara or senna for constipation relief because it is less likely to cause dehydration.

Ginger

Digestive health is easily promoted with the consumption of ginger. When you are experiencing cramps because of constipation, this is definitely the herb to try. One of the most commonly known medicinal uses for ginger is for the relief of nausea. Pregnant women can take ginger as a safe remedy against morning sickness. It is also effective in reducing nausea and vomiting that may occur after surgery. Another use for this multi-faceted herb is for the dissolution of harmful parasites and their eggs. This is why sushi is commonly served with ginger.

Fennel

Fennel seed is commonly used for culinary purposes, but it is also a preventative against gas and indigestion. You will find it in lozenges and syrups all over Europe. The smooth muscles that line the digestive tract are relaxed when they come in contact with this herb. According to Phyllis A. Balch, Certified Nutritional Consultant, infants show improvements from the symptoms of colic when given fennel tea. However, be sure to dilute fennel seed oil or drink the herb in tea form because pure fennel seed oil can cause burning in the lower digestive tract.

Turmeric

This herb, often used as a spice in Middle Eastern dishes, has many benefits in the digestive system. Because of tumeric's affect on the liver, bile can be more efficiently excreted. This directly promotes the proper digestion of fats. Turmeric exhibits anti-inflammatory action on the mucous membranes, offering benefit to those suffering from colitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Marshmallow

Marshmallow is used medicinally in both Europe and Asia. Given the ability of marshmallow root to reduce irritation and inflammation of mucous membranes, it makes for an excellent remedy to strengthen the digestive system. Teas made from this herb have powerful polysaccharides, which can help in the formation of the protective lining around the stomach. This is especially beneficial for those suffering from Crohn's disease. Marshmallow can also help to reduce acid levels in the stomach, so people with peptic ulcers may find relief when using this herb.
