If you are concerned about side effects and want to try alternatives to over-the-counter and prescription drugs, you may be interested in stocking your medicine chest with homeopathic remedies. While safe and without side effects, homeopathic remedies are not subjected to the same rigorous product testing given to conventional drugs. However, there is much anecdotal evidence that they work, and many people swear by them.

Homeopathy

Based on the theory that "like cures like," homeopathic remedies are made of substances that cause the same symptoms they are trying to cure. According to Hmedicine.com, something that causes the symptom in full strength is diluted millions of times until only a minute amount remains. Homeopathy teaches that this minute amount will heal the symptoms.
While you can buy individual remedies at any health or natural foods store, many homeopathic remedies are premixed to treat common conditions like colds and flu, sinus problems, muscle aches and pain and allergies.

Arnica Montana

Available in tablets and creams, arnica has entered the mainstream as a treatment for muscle aches and pains, strained joints and bruising. It can also be used for arthritis, fractures, pain following childbirth, and emotional and physical trauma, according to Hmedicine.com.

Silicea

Silicea is used to treat mental exhaustion, swollen glands, smelly feet, inflamed eyelids, acne, boils and abscesses. It can also be used to treat earaches, according to Hmedicine.com.

Calendua Officinalis

Calendula, made from the common marigold, is often sold in a cream form. Use it on cuts, scrapes and wounds that won't heal, according to Hmedicine.com.

Aconitum Napellus

Effective for the common cold, fever and earache, aconitum also treats fear and anxiety, says Hmedicine.com.

Rescue Remedy

Another homeopathic remedy that has crossed into mainstream use, Bach Flower Essences' Rescue Remedy is a tincture that helps relieve stress or anxiety. It is also available in a cream, spray, pastilles and gel. There are also versions for increased energy, sleep and for your pets, according the Bach Flower Remedies website.

Badger Balm

Badger makes a variety of creams, oils and body butters that help with everything from bug repellent to sleep inducing.

Oscillococcinum

Taken at the first sign of flu symptoms, oscillococcinum reduces the duration and intensity of flu. It has no side effects and is safe for everyone over the age of two, according to the Oscillo website.
