Heartburn is a common complaint during pregnancy. Obstetricians at the University of Cincinnati explain that the digestive tract slows significantly during pregnancy. This allows for more nutrients to be absorbed into the body. In addition to a slower digestive tract, the one-way valve at the bottom of the esophagus becomes softer during pregnancy. This allows the acidic contents of the stomach back into the throat, causing an uncomfortable burning sensation.

Posture After Meals

If an expectant mother is fatigued after a meal, it is better to rest with the head elevated. The valve that typically prevents reflux into the esophagus is softened by pregnancy hormones. Lying flat enables easier passage of the acidic contents of the stomach into the lower esophagus. Drs. Thomas A deHoop and Arthur T. Ollendorff of the University of Cincinnati recommend propping the head up on pillows to reduce or alleviate symptoms of heartburn.

Over-the-Counter Heartburn Remedies

There are several over-the-counter heartburn remedies that may help. Expectant mothers should consult a physician before taking any medication for heartburn. Calcium-based products, such as Tums, are generally favored, because they safely relieve heartburn and provide the extra calcium pregnancy mothers need. According to Drugs.com, calcium carbonate has not been studied in humans, but it is commonly used by expectant mothers, and no harmful side effects are known. Talking to a doctor or midwife when selecting an over-the-counter remedy for heartburn will help pregnant moms avoid medicines with undesirable ingredients.

Dairy

Dairy products are used to treat heartburn as long as the expectant mother is not lactose intolerant. Drinking a glass of milk or eating a cup of yogurt can sooth an acidic stomach or an esophagus experiencing the effects of acid reflux. Editors at Childbirth.org recommend warm milk with a tablespoon of honey.

Acupuncture

Women in the West can take advantage of the relief offered by traditional acupuncture. Acupuncture is used to safely treat many conditions, especially the gastrointestinal discomforts associated with pregnancy. The National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine provides an online database to help consumers search for qualified professionals.
