3 Ways to Prevent Excessive Urination

1. Watch What you Drink

It may sound a little too simple, but one way to prevent excessive urination, or polyuria, is to keep track of how much fluid you drink in the course of a day. It may be useful to keep a beverage diary, charting how much you drink, when and what types of fluids. A healthy amount of fluid to drink is in the range of two quarts per day, which is 64 ounces or 8 8-ounce glasses. If you are drinking much more than this, you may need to cut back on your fluid intake. Alcoholic drinks and beverages containing caffeine can also cause the body to produce excess urine.

2. Be Mindful of Medications

Certain types of medications can result in excessive urination. If you take lithium for bipolar disorder or you have been prescribed the antibiotic known as demeclocycline, you may need to speak with your doctor about the side effects you may be experiencing, including your polyuria. If you are taking any sort of diuretic, this will also increase the amount of urine you pass. If your excessive urination becomes severe, you may even need to take an anti-diuretic to slow the flow, but only do so after checking with your doctor.

3. Manage Your Blood Glucose Levels

Polyuria is often the result of diabetes, so if you are or suspect you may be diabetic, you can put an end to your excessive urination by keeping your blood glucose levels within the target range. Check with your physician to undergo blood glucose testing as the first step of your treatment, and then consult with her about a plan to manage your diabetes. A healthy diet low in carbohydrates and sugar can help, as can moderate daily exercise. You may also need to be treated with insulin or other diabetic medications, and you will need to learn how to test your own blood glucose levels and administer your own medications as needed. Once you have your diabetes under control, you should find that you no longer have a problem with excessive urination.
