Being healthy is not a simple task, and while some people consider a fit lifestyle to be human nature, by today's standards of living a healthful lifestyle requires extra effort and considerations. Fitness, diet and nutrition--all three words have different definitions and together will contribute to a healthy, low risk life. Accomplishing a fit and nutritious life is done through long-term commitment to your own health. To achieve optimum status, having the right mindset toward nutrition, exercise and body image is essential.

Nutrition

Nutrition is defined as optimal health through dietary guidance. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, dietary guidelines are determined through accurate scientific research and the energy needs of humans. An adult requires anywhere from 1,800 to 2,600 calories per day. For many people, at least 1,200 calories is required to obtain adequate nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals and protein. By not eating enough calories, the nutrients will not be able to adequately function and act on their essential functions in your body.

Diet

A healthy, well-balanced diet leads to good nutrition. The USDA's MyPyramid guidelines offer a diet plan that has the goal of maintaining optimum nutritional status. The five food groups necessary for consumption every day are grains, vegetables, fruits, meats and beans, and dairy. Grains, vegetables and fruits help your body obtain adequate fiber as well as essential vitamins and minerals. The meats and beans group helps the body obtain adequate protein for growth, as well as the dairy group providing essential calcium for bone growth.

Fitness

Fitness is obtained by being physically active on a daily basis. Physical activity is defined as movement of the body that requires energy. It is important to incorporate physical activity along with a healthy diet. According to the American Heart Association, physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease. Healthy adults age 18 to 65 years old should be getting at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five days a week. Exercise can be incorporated into work and play.

Exercise

Exercise is a method to achieving good bodily fitness. Taking the stairs and parking a distance from your destination are small steps you can take, but it is important to include more intense activity for a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. Check with your doctor to see if it would be beneficial for you to start jogging or playing sports that incorporate constant movement, such as soccer and tennis. Some people also enjoy yoga or tai chi for relaxation as well as fitness.

Considerations

Living a healthy lifestyle is more beneficial than the numbers determining fat and muscle percentages; in fact, much evidence is being published in support of a healthy lifestyle leading to decreased chronic diseases more than body weight or muscle mass. A personal focus on health rather than weight helps you to maintain bodily and mental health and decrease risks for future diseases.
