Medicinal herbs have been used to treat health conditions for a very long time. They supply the body with valuable nutrients the body may be lacking, and they help the body to heal itself. Some medicinal herbs are used to make drugs, but most of the time these drugs come with serious side effects. Since many people know that medicinal herbs can help them with few side effects, medicinal herbs are now being used more frequently as an alternative medicine. Three popular medicinal herbs are listed below.
Since medicinal herbs are not tested before they are put on the market, and since improper use of some herbs can be harmful, it is best you consult with your doctor before using any medicinal herbs.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo leaves grow on a tree, and its seeds were commonly used in China for many years before ginkgo became popular in America. Over the years, the extract from this plant has been administered to help with disorders such as asthma, bronchitis and lethargy, but in modern times, people take this extract for problems associated with memory, problems involving sex, MS and other health problems. Ginkgo offers protection against heart disease, as it thins the blood and prevents blood clots. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, researchers from the New York Institute for Medical Research, located in Tarrytown, say studies show ginkgo may be able to help people with dementia and Alzheimer's. This medicinal herb can be taken in pill form, as an extract, or as a tea. Some of ginkgo's side effects include head pain, stomach upset, diarrhea, dizzy spells and allergic reactions on the skin.

Echinacea

Echinacea is a purple/pink flower that has been used to treat snakes bites, but Echinacea is frequently used these days to boost immunity and fight colds, the flu and throat inflammation. This herb is also used to treat skin conditions such as acne and open skin injuries. Externally, Echinacea can be used as an ointment. Internally, Echinacea is taken as an extract, pill or tea. Echinacea contains polysaccharides, flavonoids and essential oils. Side effects associated with Echinacea are not common, although some individuals have experienced an allergic response.

Ginseng

Asian ginseng is a popular root herb. It is used to stimulate immunity, and it is used to restore good health after sickness. This herb is taken to enhance the body's ability to perform mentally and physically, to improve mood, to alleviate stress and to increase libido. Ginseng is also taken to bring down blood glucose, stabilize blood pressure and alleviate a queasy stomach. Some of the side effects of ginseng are head pain, allergic response, trouble sleeping and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
