Herbs to Heal the Liver

Alternative and complementary medicines have long suggested the use of herbs to detoxify, support and heal the liver. Since your liver clears toxic residues of your diet and medications from your body, it often requires extra care and attention. Herbs can be a safe and effective options to treat liver problems and to provide consistent care to maintain the health of your liver. Always consult your physician before beginning any herbal treatment regimen, particularly if you are currently taking medication, are pregnant or are nursing.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle has been used for thousands of years to remedy ailments of the liver. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that milk thistle protects the liver from many toxins, including aspirin, which can cause liver damage in high doses. The active chemical present in milk thistle is silymarin. Silymarin acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent and may assist the liver in the production of new cells.

Dandelion

Dandelion is a plant that is much more than a weed. In traditional Arabian and Chinese medicine, dandelion has been used to treat liver disease and enhance immune system function. The dandelion root is used for preparation of a tea or tincture for treating liver disorders. Some naturopathic doctors support the use of dandelion to detoxify the liver and reduce the side effects of toxic medications.

Yellow Dock

The University of Michigan Health System recommends the use of yellow dock for the support and detoxification of the liver. Yellow dock is traditionally used an an alternative medicine for liver problems and skin conditions caused by liver problems. A tincture of yellow dock in the amount of 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. taken three times per day is recommended.
