Acid reflux, also called heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), refers to a burning sensation in the esophagus due to the build-up of stomach acids. When the sphincter muscle, located between the stomach and esophagus, fails to completely close, or weakens, stomach acids can enter the esophagus and cause pain, according to Stanford University's Wellsphere website. There are many lifestyle changes that can help prevent this condition and several things you can do at home to help ease the burning of acid reflux.
Apple Cider Vinegar
One tbsp. of apple cider vinegar mixed with about 4 oz. of water can cure the symptoms of acid reflux, according to GlobalHealingCenter.com. The website says that the apple cider vinegar can help with the stomach's digestive process and can be effective against acute bouts of heartburn. Also, it works quickly. The website Revolution Health recommends 2 or 3 tsps. of undiluted apple cider vinegar for a sudden, very painful attack and a mixture of vinegar and water to help prevent recurrences.
Water
Since acid reflux is caused by the build-up of acids in the esophagus, water can help alleviate the burning sensation. The website Natural Home Remedies reports that water dilutes the acid in the stomach and can help lower the overall acidity of your stomach contents. The Wellsphere website at Stanford University says drinking a lot of water can result in a reduction of acid reflux pain.
Peppermint
Peppermint is good for the digestive system and helps the stomach break down food, according to the Stanford Wellsphere website.
Aloe Vera Juice
Aloe vera juice is used as a treatment for upset stomach and other digestive disorders, and the Global Healing Center website says it is an effective treatment for acid reflux. Global Healing Center notes that aloe vera juice helps with digestion and recommends 1 oz. of aloe vera juice mixed with 2 oz. of water. If the solution is consumed as symptoms begin, it can be effective at treating the condition.
