Although the most well-known brand-name drug version of isotretinoin--Accutane--was pulled from the market, the anti-acne medication may still be prescribed with other brand names. The Food and Drug Administration reported in 2002 serious concerns over the potential for suicidal thoughts and actions as well as depression that had been reported by isotretinoin users. The medication also may induce birth defects if used by pregnant women, the Mayo Clinic says.
Skin Infection
Taking isotretinoin capsules may induce some common side effects classified as serious that may require medical help, the Mayo Clinic says. For example, the medication can induce the formation of an infection of the skin. This also may appear as a rash. These problems may occur anywhere on the person's body, but other forms of skin maladies may occur only on the lips. The use of isotretinoin may produce pain, burning, redness or scaling on the person's lips, or it may create some other form of inflammation, the Mayo Clinic reports. FamilyDoctor.org classifies dryness of the lips and skin as non-serious side effects that may be treated with creams and lotions.
Joint and Motion Problems
Isotretinoin use can cause serious side effects in joints and bones, the Mayo Clinic says. The medicine may make your joints and bones ache. The drug also can cause bodily motion difficulties that may accompany--or may occur separately from--these aches and pains. The person should consult a doctor immediately about any of these common side effects, the Mayo Clinic says.
Eye Problems and Nosebleeds
Eye inflammation may occur as a side effect of isotretinoin that also classifies as serious and common. Your eyes may itch or burn and may look red. Nosebleeds, while not often considered serious, will be if they occur while the person takes isotretinoin, the Mayo Clinic says.
Unusual Hair Growth
Drugs.com reports that isotretinoin may induce an abnormal growth of hair at the outset of treatment with the medication, although this isn't serious. FamilyDoctor.org and Drugs.com say the person's hair may temporarily thin when taking the drug. In either case, these side effects typically don't persist and end without medical aid.
Menstrual Changes
When a woman takes isotretinoin, she may experience changes in her normal menstrual cycles, Drugs.com reports. She may have heavier or lighter bleeding than normal, or she may bleed between cycles.
