Doctors may prescribe Winstrol, one of the brand names in the United States for the generically termed anabolic steroid stanozolol, for several ailments. These include weight gain following severe infections, illnesses or injuries, to treat anemia or female breast cancer and angioedema, among other problems. The Mayo Clinic says those using Winstrol should accompany it with a diet of high caloric and protein content. Physicians administer Winstrol as a pill.
Acne
When women or young boys use Winstrol, they may experience common serious side effects that include developing acne. Although in most cases acne doesn't indicate serious problems, it does with the use of the anabolic steroid, the Mayo Clinic says. The organization recommends immediate consultation with a doctor if acne develops.
Sexual Organ Enlargement
Women may experience an enlargement of the clitoris as a serious common side effect of Winstrol. Boys may have an enlargement of the penis. Both of these classify as serious problems that need medical aid immediately.
Erection Changes
Men and boys who use prescription Winstrol may find they experience an increase in the frequency of erections. In mature men, the Mayo Clinic reports, erections may be continual. Serious common side effects such as these also require medical help immediately.
Hair Problems
Some women may experience the growth of hair in unusual places on their bodies when taking Winstrol. Others may lose hair abnormally. Boys also may experience the growth of hair that does not appear natural.
Sexual Desire Changes
Drugs.com reports that people who use Winstrol may find their sexual appetites changed because of the medication. This can mean a decrease or increase in the desire for sexual intercourse and other sexual activities. Drugs.com recommends consulting a physician about any libido changes.
Insomnia and Headaches
Although Drugs.com classifies side effects such as difficulty sleeping and headaches as less serious, it recommends asking a doctor about them. Sleeping difficulties may include insomnia or the inability to get to sleep, or problems getting a full night's sleep.
