DIY Get Rid of Moles

A mole is a skin growth composed of nevus cells. These cells contain a large amount of melanin, a substance that gives skin its color, and this generally makes the mole a dark color. Moles are benign by themselves, but the Skin Cancer Foundation states that more than 100 moles may indicate a greater risk of skin cancer. Depending on the type of mole you have, you may be able to treat it by yourself with common household items. Apple cider vinegar, also known as ACV, is a popular home remedy for getting rid of moles.

Step 1

Soften the mole so that the ACV will penetrate the mole more easily. Apply a washcloth soaked in warm water to the mole for at least 15 minutes.

Step 2

Apply a layer of petroleum jelly around the mole without getting it on the mole itself. This will protect your healthy skin from the ACV while still allowing the ACV to attack the mole.

Step 3

Soak a cotton ball in a small container of ACV. Apply the cotton ball to the mole, while taking care not to touch any healthy skin that's unprotected by the petroleum jelly. ACV is commonly available from health food and grocery stores.

Step 4

Hold the cotton ball in place over the mole with an adhesive bandage for not more than 15 minutes. Remove the ACV and petroleum jelly with soap and water. Pat the mole dry with a towel.

Tips and Warnings

  • Repeat these steps a maximum of four times per day until the mole fades or drops off entirely, which should take a few days.
  • Consult your physician before attempting this remedy at home. Moles with an atypical appearance may be precancerous. See a dermatologist if you have such a mole.
