As the global economy becomes more integrated, financial policies are no longer focused on individual nations. Often a union of countries creates a more healthy environment for commercial success. A regional investment agreement can be a critical shared policy among nations in proximity to each other. This international agreement can open doors for the economies of its member nations.

Definition

A regional investment agreement is a set of financial policies endorsed by several countries in a region. It addresses all the major issues affecting corporate and economic activity between the nations. While a country may have its own laws affecting how businesses operate domestically, a regional investment agreement outlines commercial activity that affects all the countries in the agreement.

New Business Setup

Many issues must have mutual agreement between all the countries affected by a regional investment agreement. For a business to operate seamlessly between these nations, the requirements for incorporation and licensing need to be standardized. A regional investment agreement lays out the official costs required for starting a new business, and these costs are the same in all nations relative to a specific area's per-capita income. Additionally, the process for acquiring a business license must be the same between the countries. This provides businesses easier access to the markets of other nations in the agreement.

International Business Activity

While a company may have easier access to other nations in its proximity, there are some issues related to international business that cannot be completely eliminated. Customs inspections, for example, are still necessary. However a regional investment agreement aims to standardize these aspects of international business so they are predictable. The duration of a customs delay due to inspection and clearance is one of the issues a regional investment agreement addresses.

Taxes and Credit

Most corporations rely on creditors to help fund their business. Additionally, all businesses must pay taxes in most countries. Without a regional investment agreement, a business may have to follow different tax laws in different countries. This can complicate international business. Additionally, a business may be unable to secure credit from foreign creditors in other countries. A regional investment agreement outlines the standardization of creditor rights. It also makes the business tax payment schedule the same in all the countries affected by the agreement.

Existing Agreements

Regional investment agreements have helped many countries grow their economy due to the efficiencies provided by these policies. The European Union is one of the largest and most successful examples of the power of the regional investment agreement. However, the Asian regional investment agreement affects China, Japan and Korea. It was in part due to this agreement that China was able to transform its economy into the third largest of the world. Nancy Lee, former U.S. Treasury deputy, has openly discussed the need for a regional investment agreement for the Americas, including Latin America and South America. This could strengthen the economies of these nations.
