Running, walking and even standing can be uncomfortable if your feet itch. According to the Mayo Clinic, one complication of itching is neurodermatitis--a condition that results when an area of your skin that is frequently scratched becomes thick and leathery. Although, itching on the feet isn't generally a problem, it may require topical ointment or other types of medication to cure.

Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot is a condition that may cause itchiness. Athlete's foot is caused by a group of mold-like fungi that are known as dermatophytes, according to the Mayo Clinic. The fungi typically grow in environments that are moist and damp. Many athletes are known to acquire athlete's foot due to the conditions of their particular training and sports. Shoes and socks that are full of sweat and water can provide a perfect environment for the fungi to grow. Other symptoms aside from itchiness include, burning, stinging, blisters and scaly skin.

Dry Skin

Dry skin may cause itching in the foot area. One cause for dry skin, according to the Mayo Clinic, is psoriasis--which is caused by a quick buildup of dry, rough and dead skin cells. The dead skin form thick scales that eventually cause itching. Hot baths or showers are another possible cause for itchy feet. The heated water breaks down lipid barriers in your skin causing dryness and itching; lipid barriers prevent loss of moisture in the skin.

Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is another condition that can cause itchiness on the foot area. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, contact dermatitis is caused by having direct contact with an irritating substance--such as poison ivy--leading to an inflammation of the skin that can cause itching, burning and painful rashes. If you walk around barefoot and come into contact with any substance that causes an allergic reaction, you may develop contact dermatitis. Sometimes certain laundry detergents or fabric cleaners can cause contact dermatitis. It may occur when the socks you have washed with the particular substance causes your feet to become irritated. If you notice specific substances that cause itching, especially to the foot area, avoid them.

Insect Bites

Insect bites are another common cause of itching on the feet. Insects such as fleas, mosquitoes and ticks all have the ability to irritate human skin through biting. According to the Mayo Clinic, when insects bite, they deposit a small amount of saliva back under your skin. The saliva contains proteins that our immune system reacts to, causing itching. In the summer time, when insects are more active, many people expose their feet either by wearing sandals or walking barefoot. This makes it more likely you'll be bitten. Use insect repellent or keep your feet covered when outside.
