Excessive itching and irritated skin can be caused by an assortment of conditions and ailments. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, some of the most common causes of itching include psoriasis, allergies and insect bites. Contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis are two other causes of itching and irritated skin. If you experience painful itching or itching that does not go away, contact your physician immediately.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a condition that causes itching and irritated skin. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, psoriasis is a common condition that can affect people of any age. It more commonly begins between the ages of 15 and 35. It can appear suddenly or slowly. Skin cells that are grown deep in the skin normally make their way to the surface about once every month. When you have psoriasis, this process occurs too fast and as a result, there is a buildup of dead skin cells on the skin's surface. Aside from itching and irritated skin, other signs and symptoms of psoriasis include patches of skin that appear scaly, red and inflamed. Typically, the patches of skin appear raised and thick. Since there is no cure, the goal of treatment is to reduce the signs and severity of symptoms. Your dermatologist may prescribe topical ointment or other medications as a form of treatment.
Airborne or Food Allergies
According to the Mayo Clinic, allergies are caused when the immune system overreacts to allergens that can be found in the air or in food. Some allergens are associated with insect bites. Airborne allergens may include pollen, dust and other small particles. When the body comes into contact with a particular allergen, it produces antibodies that release a variety of chemicals. One chemical in particular, called histamine, can cause characteristic allergic reactions such as itching, red skin and flaky or peeling skin. Avoid certain foods or substances if you believe you may be allergic to them.
Contact and Atopic Dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis is a condition that usually accompanies allergies and results from a combination of dry and irritated skin as well as immune system abnormalities. Atopic dermatitis may cause severe itching and small red bumps that may leak fluid and crust over when scratched or disturbed. Contact dermatitis is a type of allergic condition that can cause irritated skin and itching. According to the Mayo Clinic, certain contact from substances such as poison oak, poison ivy, cosmetics, soap and jewelry can all cause contact dermatitis. Contact dermatitis may cause a red, itchy rash to develop. The rash can be uncomfortable but is not contagious or life threatening.
