How to Lose Weight with Nutrisystem

Many Americans are overweight and therefore are at higher risks of certain diseases. Losing weight can be difficult for some people, especially those who don't have time to plan their meals ahead of time and cook foods from scratch. The Nutrisystem diet is one popular diet which uses pre-portioned, shelf-stable meals and snacks, delivered to your door. These foods come in a variety of different choices, and are all low in calories so that losing weight is simply a matter of eating the foods you have available.

Step 1

Go online to www.Nutrisystem.com and choose the plan that best suits your lifestyle and dietary needs. According to the Nutrisystem website, there are eight main plans to choose from.

You begin by choosing whether you are a man or a woman, since there are differing nutritional needs between the sexes. Next, you can choose between the basic meal plan, the meal plan for people age 65 or over, the meal plan for diabetics and the meal plan for vegetarians.

Step 2

Read through the meals and snacks that Nutrisystem offers, and choose the ones that sound the best to you within your selected meal plan. Instead of authorizing autoship, where the company selects the meals for you and automatically sends them to you each month, it's a better idea to choose them yourself. Consumer Reports states that there have been many complaints towards the Nutrisystem Company about people not liking the taste of the meals selected for them. Since Nutrisystem is a low-calorie diet and you will be eating less than what you are probably used to, you want to at least make sure the meals you eat are satisfying.

Step 3

Add fruits and vegetables in with the Nutrisystem meals to balance out your diet. Some of the Nutrisystem meals contain vegetables, but it's also important to eat fresh fruits and veggies to reap the benefits of healthy antioxidants and to help to stay full longer.

Try eating some steamed broccoli with a Nutrisystem dinner, or a sliced banana with a Nutrisystem breakfast. Adding two or three servings of fruits and vegetables daily will not significantly alter your calorie intake, but it will help to keep you motivated and feel full.

Step 4

Exercise for at least 60 minutes five days a week. The American College of Sports Medicine states that in order to lose weight, you need to do 60 minutes or longer of exercise on most days. Find a type of exercise that you love to do, such as swimming or dancing, and stick with it.

Step 5

Stick with the Nutrisysem diet and exercise program for at least a few months without getting discouraged if you do not start to see change immediately. According to Consumer Affairs, Nutrisystem diets range in calories from 1200 to 1500 a day. Since the Mayo Clinic states that it takes an deficit of 500 calories a day to lose a pound a week, the process may take up to a few months or more, depending on your goal rate. If you stick with the program and your exercise habits, however, you can make the Nutrisystem diet work for you.
