Racquetball Serving Tips

Serving in racquetball is one of the big keys to having a chance at winning in this competitive game. In order to have the best chance to win points while serving, you need to develop a variety of serves. This will help you keep your opponent off balance. When he does not know what to expect, you can dictate the pace of the game.

Drive Serve

This is your bread-and-butter serve in racquetball. If you can consistently hit a low hard serve to either corner, your opponent will almost always have to reach for the ball just to get it back and it will be hard for him to seize control of the point. Your drive serve should be your most dependable weapon. Placement is vital. If you don't hit it into the corner it will be a relatively easy shot for your opponent to return.

Change the Pace

Check out your opponent's position on the court before you serve. Just as you have been studying him, he has been studying you. He may anticipate a certain serve at a point in the game and he may tip his belief by the way he is standing. If you think he is going to try to cut off your drive serve, do just the opposite and hit a lob serve that bounds high and deep in the corner. That serve will go against your opponent's expectations and help give you an edge.

Backhand Serve

Many players hit forehand serve after forehand serve. Your opponent is not even considering anything else. However, by hitting a backhand serve you can fool your opponent and keep him from getting to comfortable. All you have to do is hit the front wall first with that serve. You can do a backhand serve with a quick body turn and a flick of the wrist. Your opponent may freeze as he tries to realize what just happened and he may not be able to react in time to return the shot.
