Age, stress and a variety of other factors can cause memory and concentration to fade. Prescription medications are available to slow memory loss associated with certain diseases like Alzheimer's disease. However, there is not much offered for people suffering from memory loss not associated with a medical condition. Fortunately, certain herbs can naturally improve the memory when consumed on a regular basis. Anyone looking to take an herbal supplement should contact a health care provider prior to doing so.
Rosemary
Rosemary improves memory, according to "Mindful Herbs," an article that appeared in Yoga Journal. It does so in two ways. Rosemary acts as an antioxidant which protects the body against free radicals that can damage the brain and other cells. It also improves the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which results in improved memory during stressful situations. Rosemary can be purchased as a fresh herb at most grocery stores or as an herbal supplement in health food and vitamin stores.
Huperzine A
Huperzine A is an herb derived from a Chinese moss plant. The Mayo Clinic notes it may improve cognitive decline by enhancing neurotransmitters in the brain, but further research is needed to fully support this claim. Huperzine A can be purchased as an herbal supplement in many health food and vitamin stores. Anyone currently taking medications for Alzheimer's disease is not advised to take Huperzine A, as it may have serious side effects.
Gingko Biloba
Gingko biloba is another herb commonly used to improve the memory. It has long been used in Chinese medicine. Like rosemary, gingko biloba has antioxidant properties that protect brain cells against damage. According to the Alzheimer's Association, gingko biloba also has anti-inflammatory properties, which help control neurotransmitter functioning in the brain.
Turmeric
Turmeric is an herb that comes from the Curcuma plant. It exhibits many anti-inflammatory properties, which is why it's so popular in Chinese medicine. "The World's Healthiest Foods" website notes that turmeric's anti-inflammatory properties may stop plaque from forming in brain cells. Too much plaque disrupts normal brain cell function. Rarely, turmeric can be purchased as a fresh herb. It is more commonly available as an herbal supplement.
