Using a skateboard ramp opens up a whole new world of tricks that street skating just can't provide. Whether it's a mini-ramp or a half-pipe, pulling tricks on a ramp takes time and practice and a basic foundation of skateboarding skills. Don't try any tricks you're uncomfortable with and always wear the proper safety equipment.
Grinds
A grind is a move that uses the momentum of the skateboard to travel the length of the rim of the skateboard ramp. You can perform a grind on either tail of the skateboard or even on both side edges. To perform a grind on the tail of the skateboard, approach the ramp at one side or the other going at medium speed. As you approach the top of the ramp, begin to move toward the center of the ramp. At the same time, lean your weight toward the top of the ramp and use your feet to catch the lip with the edge of the skateboard. Use your momentum to ride the lip of the ramp with the edge of the skateboard. As you approach the other end of the ramp, just let gravity pull you and the skateboard back down the ramp. To grind with the edge of the skateboard, perform an Ollie by lifting the skateboard fully off the ramp and turning your body toward the ramp on the side you want to grind. Grind on the lip, then Ollie again to return to the ramp and go back down.
Ollie to Tail
A nice transition move on the lip of the ramp, the Ollie to tail is a beginner trick that will help you develop the skills you need to perform more complicated tricks down the road. The Ollie to tail is done by performing an Ollie just before reaching the lip of the ramp. In mid-Ollie, turn your body 180 degrees so the end of the skateboard that was facing away from the ramp is now facing the lip. Rest the edge on the lip for a second, then let your momentum carry you and the skateboard back down the ramp.
Hand Plant
A hand plant is a real crowd pleaser that requires balance and coordination. To perform a hand plant, ride your skateboard up the ramp at a relatively high speed. You will need the proper amount of momentum to properly perform the move. As you approach the top of the ramp, plant one hand on the lip and use your momentum to lift your body up in the air. Grab the skateboard with your free hand and keep it pressed to your feet. The more vertical your body can get while performing the hand plant, the more impressive the trick. Allow your body to come back down and keep holding the skateboard to your feet as you find the ramp with your skateboard. Crouch down as you ride back down the ramp to keep your balance.
